Good Morning Quilters! There is a new shop coming to the Bay Area on September 1, 2016.
Bay Quilts
5327 Jacuzzi St #3C
Richmond, CA 94804
510-558-0218 http://www.sfbayquilts.com (coming!)
Shop Gallery Consignment Quilts/Dolls Worshops
I didn’t notice QuiltWorks on the map. Should definitely be included! Here is some of their information:
QuiltWorks & ThriftStitch
[owner: Linda Hannawalt]
2189 Bayshore Blvd., #101; SF 94134
(415) 656-1607; http://www.QuiltWorks.org
Peppermint Pinwheels says:
Hi Ginger, I heard they’re moving to Mexico soon, is that correct?
Pauline ao'Connell says:
Not “moving” per se, but expanding. SFStore remains, while Linda is opening the very first quilt shop in Mexico.
Hi! There’s an interesting fabric source in Mountain View (mid-peninsula, just off 101) that you might consider listing. FabMo rescues new/unused designer and home goods fabrics from showrooms and makes them available to the public through monthly events: one weekend is mainly designer/upholstery, another is home goods, etc. Anyone can shop, prices are extremely low, inventory is constantly changing. Their website is a bit rough: http://www.fabmo.org but the fabrics are beautiful. I’m a client; my project makes accessory bags, cases, totes, etc. as fundraisers: http://actforgreatapes.org/gorillas-thrive.html
Thanks for listening!
Three Alameda updates:
Quilt Fans has been closed for a few years now.
Needle in a Haystack is a fantastic needlework shop. You can find fun threads, charms and beads to embellish your quilts…2433 Mariner Square Loop, Suite 102, 510-522-0404, 877-429-7822.
The Sewing Room primarily caters to people who sew clothes, holding lessons and parties, but there is a selection of fabric in the shop… 2434 Webb Avenue, 510-332-9807.
Natural Expressions in Los Gatos is my favorite for the South Bay. The shop also sells beads – they don’t have a huge area devoted to fabric, but they have a high proportion of modern fabrics from designers like Amy Butler, Anna Marie Horner, Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry, etc.
Also in the South Bay are The Granary, (slightly more traditional fabrics, but lots of colors if you need to pick up an additional fabric for a quilt) Prairie Queen (haven’t enjoyed the customer service at this store, fabric ok), and Beverly’s (fabric is superior to Joann’s but price is similar. Some fabrics are “quilt-shop quality” and some are not).
I don’t know how far south you are wanting to go, but a great shop for modern fabrics is Harts Fabric in Santa Cruz. Definitely worth the drive! They also have quite a few organic fabrics as well as trims and other fun notions.
Thank you so much for creating this list! I am brand new to sewing and this website has been so helpful. I honestly did not know there were fabric stores beyond JoAnn. I appreciate the time and effort you took to create this list.
I haven’t been to any of these, but a few to add in the North Bay:
Quilted Angel
200 G Street
Petaluma
Stitch Craft
133 Kentucky Street
Petaluma
Picket Fence Quilts
6090 B Redwood Blvd
Novato
There used to be a store on Fourth Street in San Rafael–around 4th & E–but I can’t find it anywhere via Google. Also, found this when looking for Stitch Craft’s info: http://sarahbeata.wordpress.com/shopping/
Wowza! Thanks, Margaret. Just added a bunch of new shops to the map!
Linda Gavette says:
Quilted Angel has classes and a really nice selection of quilting fabrics.
Stitch Craft is run by a woman who spent years in the clothing manufacturing industry. It is mostly a teaching business but she has some nice fabrics and a few notions as well. Very small but I hear her classes are great.
Picket Fences Closed.
So where would be the best (i.e. least expensive) place for yardage of white flannel? It’s for the design wall in my new place, so cheap is fine, but it’s not on sale at Jo-ann’s right now, and I am totally new to the area (been in Oakland for 6 days after 13 years in Los Angeles).
Hi Alison – welcome to the area! You could try Discount Fabric on San Pablo in Berkeley. I used a king size flannel sheet that I got at a second hand sale. I don’t think you can get any cheaper than that!
Great Map…and so sad how sparse the San Francisco fabric shops are!! Unfortunately, Urban Burp has closed its Columbus Ave doors, but will hopefully be reopening in a yet to be decided location soon. There is also a Discount Fabric at 2315 Irving Street – (415) 564-7333.
How can one read the reviews of the stores? I double clicked on a review but nothing happened. Beverly’s in Alameda has great quilting fabric (quilt store quality). They also have a monthly flyer with a coupon for 25% off the price of one piece of fabric which helps! They do have some lesser quality fabric but that is normally on a table set apart from the quality fabric. I have gotten LOTS of great fabric there for a very reasonable price! The fabric manager is wonderful as well as the two women who normally work Saturdays! Love this store for fabric!
The map doesn’t have reviews left by us as a guild. It’s only a listing that we’ve compiled of known fabric shops in the Bay Area. You can read the reviews through Google by clicking on the name of the store, but it’s not something set up through our map.
Peapod Fabrics 1400 Irving St San Francisco is very cute with her window trims. Her fabrics are retro designs.
Discount Fabric 201 – 11th St San Francisco is huge
One of the members of the Bay Area MQG just opened a brick&mortar version of her online shop, The Intrepid Thread.
It’s an easy drive down 580/880 or 660 from Oakland/Berkeley area.
1709 S. Main St, Milpitas, CA 95035, (408) 649-3844
Hours of operation :
Mon-Thur 10am – 6pm
Friday 10am – 7pm
Saturday 11am – 5pm
There’s a little imports store in Alameda that (I recently discovered) also sells yarn and a small selection of Kaffe Fassett fabrics — it’s
Silk Road
1412 Park St
Alameda, CA 94501
(510) 749-9941
We’d love to be added to your list! We carry a beautiful, bright assortment of Michael Miller, Art Gallery Fabrics, Riley Blake, and more. We also carry tons of craft supplies, Alchemy yarns, and offer classes in sewing, knitting, and calligraphy.
Know a good fabric store that we forgot? Leave a comment here and I’ll add it to our map. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation, Marcella. I just added it to the map!

This map is great, but it would be nice if you had phone numbers also.
Bobbin’s Nest Studio — 1171 Homestead Road, Suite 130, Santa Clara, CA
Done! Thanks, Amy!
Satin Moon, 32 Clement St, San Francisco
Urban Burp, 170 Columbus Ave, Suite 110, San Francisco, http://urbanburp.com/
Satin Moon was on there, but not Urban Burp! Also, now I’ve alphabetized the list!
Where can I find the alphabetical list of shops?
Click on the link below the map, where it says, “View Larger Map,” and it will take you to a map with an alphabetical list.
Once Around is a new shop in Mill Valley. In addition to quilting supplies/fabrics, they also carry supplies for many ofther crafts.
Thanks, Adrienne!

Thanks for letting us know about a new shop! I’ve added it to the map!
I hope to have a brick and mortar store one day. My shop is located in Clayton, CA.
But for now I am loving my little online shops:
JAQS Fabrics

and on Etsy :)

Laurel Leaf in San Carlos and Intrepid Thread in Milpitas are now closed. I believe Intrepid Thread may still have an on-line shop.
There’s also Beverly’s at CLayton Rd & Bailey Rd, Concord, east bay.
