Hi! There’s an interesting fabric source in Mountain View (mid-peninsula, just off 101) that you might consider listing. FabMo rescues new/unused designer and home goods fabrics from showrooms and makes them available to the public through monthly events: one weekend is mainly designer/upholstery, another is home goods, etc. Anyone can shop, prices are extremely low, inventory is constantly changing. Their website is a bit rough: http://www.fabmo.org but the fabrics are beautiful. I’m a client; my project makes accessory bags, cases, totes, etc. as fundraisers: http://actforgreatapes.org/gorillas-thrive.html

Three Alameda updates:
Quilt Fans has been closed for a few years now.
Needle in a Haystack is a fantastic needlework shop. You can find fun threads, charms and beads to embellish your quilts…2433 Mariner Square Loop, Suite 102, 510-522-0404, 877-429-7822.
The Sewing Room primarily caters to people who sew clothes, holding lessons and parties, but there is a selection of fabric in the shop… 2434 Webb Avenue, 510-332-9807.
Natural Expressions in Los Gatos is my favorite for the South Bay. The shop also sells beads – they don’t have a huge area devoted to fabric, but they have a high proportion of modern fabrics from designers like Amy Butler, Anna Marie Horner, Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry, etc.
Also in the South Bay are The Granary, (slightly more traditional fabrics, but lots of colors if you need to pick up an additional fabric for a quilt) Prairie Queen (haven’t enjoyed the customer service at this store, fabric ok), and Beverly’s (fabric is superior to Joann’s but price is similar. Some fabrics are “quilt-shop quality” and some are not).
I don’t know how far south you are wanting to go, but a great shop for modern fabrics is Harts Fabric in Santa Cruz. Definitely worth the drive! They also have quite a few organic fabrics as well as trims and other fun notions.

So where would be the best (i.e. least expensive) place for yardage of white flannel? It’s for the design wall in my new place, so cheap is fine, but it’s not on sale at Jo-ann’s right now, and I am totally new to the area (been in Oakland for 6 days after 13 years in Los Angeles).
Hi Alison – welcome to the area! You could try Discount Fabric on San Pablo in Berkeley. I used a king size flannel sheet that I got at a second hand sale. I don’t think you can get any cheaper than that!
Great Map…and so sad how sparse the San Francisco fabric shops are!! Unfortunately, Urban Burp has closed its Columbus Ave doors, but will hopefully be reopening in a yet to be decided location soon. There is also a Discount Fabric at 2315 Irving Street – (415) 564-7333.
How can one read the reviews of the stores? I double clicked on a review but nothing happened. Beverly’s in Alameda has great quilting fabric (quilt store quality). They also have a monthly flyer with a coupon for 25% off the price of one piece of fabric which helps! They do have some lesser quality fabric but that is normally on a table set apart from the quality fabric. I have gotten LOTS of great fabric there for a very reasonable price! The fabric manager is wonderful as well as the two women who normally work Saturdays! Love this store for fabric!

It’s an easy drive down 580/880 or 660 from Oakland/Berkeley area.
